I’m watching 12 Years a Slave
“Powerful story. The second act needed a tighter script (the story was so strong, it carried the viewer through the weak parts), but otherwise the film was stellar. The third act, in particular, was powerful and made up for earlier flaws. The last scene was devastatingly good. If Chiwetel Ejiofor does not get a lead acting nomination, then they should stop handing out acting awards. Supporting actor nominations should go to Michael Fassbender, Sarah Paulson, and Lupita Nyong’o. In a year of not-so-great supporting roles for women, I also could see a nod for Alfred Woodard even though her part was tiny, her performance as the unsavory Mistress Shaw was spotless in its perfection. I also see nods for soundtrack, editing, cinematography, costuming, makeup, adapted screenplay, and, of course Director, for Steve McQueen. I don’t think it should win adapted screenplay, though, as it was close to being a mess in the second act - only saved by such a strong, flawless cast. It also is a shoo-in for a best picture nomination, which could earn Brad Pitt an Oscar as producer.”
